How long have you been on CPAP?

I am trying to gauge how long our customers have, on average, been on CPAP therapy for OSA. Give me some numbers! Are you a veteran user or a newbie?

I have been on CPAP for about a year now.  Had a LOT of difficulty getting used to it, but finally got around to sleeping through the night.  Oddly enough, I used to wake up and find that my mask was off, and that (occassionally) I had unplugged my machine while sleeping!  My wife is extremely glad that I finally got used to it, and she no longer has to wake me up in the middle of the night.

Five years; I had no trouble at all adjusting to the mask. My husband is deceased so I sleep alone. The only one who might hear it is my pug, and he snores when he sleeps, too!

9 years.  I have used a few different machines, mask, and nasal pillow combinations.

I've been on CPAP for nearly 9 yrs now and it's been extremely helpful.  I did have a troublesome time adjusting to using it but;persistence, converting to nasal pillows, a chin strap to keep my mouth closed while sleeping and ramping up all helped. Looking back, I think it took 4-6 weeks.  Since then it's been all night, every night and very beneficial.  Now, I encourage people to get tested and be persistent until the adaptation and adjustment is made.

Just wish I'd been diagnosed and got on one years earlier.   Rex

I had sleep apnea for close to three years before I got my CPAP. It's been wonderful except for trying to find a mask that works perfectly for me. Even the nights where I'm up a couple of times to readjust the mask are 100 times more restful than what I was going through before.

I have been on Cpap for 4 months, I had no trouble adjusting to the mask.  I love being on Cpap, because I do not feel like I am walking around in a hazze anymore, and no more headaches.

Looks like 9 years is the winner in longest time on the hose so far! Big Smile It doesn't always seem possible to me, but when I see numbers like that I realize that CPAP and the recognization of Obstructive Sleep Apnea is still a VERY new science! Can you imagine people ten and twenty years ago who had all of the symptoms with no known cause - to feel so debilated with chronic fatigue and have no source of treatment. Actually, there are millions of individuals who still feel this pain as many doctors STILL are not aware of the seriousness and high incidence surrounding this disorder! So sad... Educate, Educate, Educate - and if any of your friends are big time snorers, refer them to your sleep doc! Wink

Re: How long have you been on CPAP?

Only 3 months for me but it took more than 10 years to figure out that sleep may be part of my headache issues. Even then, it took another 9 months before insurance would approve. I have mild OSA but a much more severe hypopnea issue. The CPAP helps with both but I must have additiona issues as I don't feel that much better. Headaches are better but I still have problems getting to sleep, staying asleep, and getting enough sleep. I range from zero to 7 hours a night. If you ask if CPAP changed my life I'd have to say no. Does it help, yes. I'm hoping that continued use of the CPAP will cause the body to adapt and adjust so whatever else is causing the sleeplessness goes away.
