A sleep study is really the best way to determine if you are having central apneas.  The sleep lab will be able to detect and distinguish the obstructive and central apneas.  Also the lab will be able to determine the best treatment mode for you.  The technology is readily available to treat the obstructive apneas and the central apneas.  The lab will try you on the right type of CPAP or BIPAP and prescribe the best equipment for you.

I recommend speaking with your doctor and getting another sleep test.
