Wow! I have the same problem with ball/socket thing! Other than that (broke two units in 1 yr period) I really love the comfort & flexibility. Now if I could just order that triangle piece . . . especially since being on a very fixed income with NO INSURANCE!!! makes it very expensive. SO I resort to super glue & duct tape!! Respironics! Listen up!!

FIX THE PROBLEM!!! OR REDESIGN THE STRAP HOLDERS!!!

I love my mask, and yes it is very weak at the "ball" holder slots. A year ago after breaking my second mask I shaved the little brackets down to the wall of the mask, then drilled 2 small holes to thread a small wire tie or "zip tie" through them and strapped the headgear right to the mask. I covered the holes with some marine sealant that I had laying around. Great FIX!!! Not a problem since. So stop buying and start fixing! Sleep better!!

I have the same problem as everyone else, the ball and socket break and my insurance only pays for one a year. This is my 3rd one in the last 12 months. I do not understand the fixes people are talking about. I am looking for another brand.

I have bought and repaired three of these masks. I drilled a hole on each sode of teh socket, used a wire-tie to secure the strap holder and filled the space around the wire-ties with hot glue. Since doing that, these masks have performed beautifully.

Pressure from the mask on my teeth roots is causing my teeth to move. No one tells you the it might cause dental problems. I had mine about 6 months and have it adjusted as loose as possible. I will go to the pillow type.

I have tried several masks and even those with nose pillows and I like to sleep on my side so this one gives me the best comfort. I've never had any trouble with the ball or any breakage. I love this mask and it's very easy to clean.

Planned obsolescence and poor design of the ball and socket feature. Imagine marketing a product to people in need and designing it so they continually have to repurchase. It seams predatory and a thicker girth in the clasp would eliminate the ball from breaking it off with little pressure. Shameful.

I like the mask OK, but like almost everyone else, mine broke at the ball socket. At this point, since Respironics has shown no inclination to fix this, it's clearly a deliberate marketing tool. I'm investigating other masks. I can't be without one, and the last time it broke, I was on vacation. Not reliable.

I really like the comfort...especially since I figured out the magic adjustment combination. Only ball/swivel on the triangle piece breaking off. The first was 3 months on a business trip, super glue/scotch tape held it together until my therapist could get a new one for a mere $350!!! 2 months later broke again...super glued for a few months without problem. Not buying a new mask ever few months. It would appear this part requires a redesign or just let us buy the plastic frame w/attach points.

The thin silicone lining burns the face, the left clip broke, the straps tighten up when you lay on the side causing pain in two opposite points, and the headband slips up and down. Very dissatified after four months of us.

The ball socket that connects the headgear to the mask is incredibly weak. Mine broke after two (2) weeks. Avoid this mask.

The socket breaks too easily. You should sell the frame separately, all the other parts are available. Two to Three frames should be included with each mask

I've used this gear for years and had the material break on me, usually from overtightening. I have used my Dremel to drill small holes where the socket are and made a wire harness for the ball. They outlast the plastic and still give full freedom of movement.

Mine broke too. Now I have the headgear strap tied around the part that the hose comes into. Seems like this Cpap stuff is short on real life mechanical knowledge. Had to lower the "prescribed" pressure because the mask seal kept blowing out & squealing like a pinched balloon. Couldn't handle the pressure unless I cranked the headgear so tight I got pressure sores or so much pain I couldn't sleep.

My husbands mask just broke (only after having it two months)...after reading these review it's a shame that the mfg does not address these issues after all the lives of millions of people affected by this condition are at risk, Respironics this is not a game, I understand your bottom line is important but people are counting on you to make a product that is dependable...in my opinion the plastic unit needs to be changed, perhaps built out of a more traditional plastic instead of this hard clear resin.

Same as everyone else. The socket breaks. I've gone thru 3 masks. My provider now tells me there's only a 3-month warranty and there's nothing they can do. The previous review on here says they're only designed to last 3 to 6 months. That is shameful (as stated by a previous reviewer).

Me too, the ball socket broke in 6 months. It would be very easy for them to add a little material to the mask to prevent this. If my new one breaks, I will have to go to another mfgrs model.

I really like the mask, but have gone through 3 in 2 years. My problem was also the ball and socket joint. My husband fixed the last one by drilling holes in the tab and inserting a metal ring (like a key chain ring). So far it's working well.

I think the company is placing some of these reveiws so they can take it off the market after aquiring the company. The replacement mask is terrible. It leaks and whistles around the rotating ball joint. The current versuion has had no such problems. Mine has never broken. Don't discontinue! If you do, I'll have to go elsewhere for a mask.

I have used the mask for 12 years. The thing that attracted me to this mask is the idea that it can be adjust with ice water and hot water to fit my face for the most comfort. I replace the headgear 2 times per year because it loses its elasticity and the Velcro closure wears out. I have had only one mask break (about 5 years ago) when the O Ring gasket split in two and the plastic adjuster on the forehead piece broke. My doctor told me that I am supposed to replace the hose and flap every month and the mask every 6 months. I say if it is not broke, why replace it. I buy replacement parts when needed, not because I am supposed to. In the 12 years with this mask, I have replaced the whole unit 3 times. I will continue to use this mask until Respironics stops making it.

You are all over-tightening your mask. I have used this mask for 6 years and have NEVER had anything break. Seriously, I have had zero issues with my mask. I wish that the mask would last longer. The gel seems to biodegrade or something, cause after while it stops being comfortable (firm).

I don't understand what they mean by ball and socket. Which part is that. My cpap masks leaks but I actually thought it was made that way. Air leaks out around the plastic part that hooks up to the back of the mask and connects to the hose. It also leaks arouond the mask when I move. Is this not suppose to happen?

Never had a problem with the ball/socket. I did have the plastic pivot on the forehead piece break after 2.5 years. Otherwise I just kept it clean and safely stored when not using it. I just don't care for the harness as it slips to easily while sleeping.

My ball and socket just broke after 2 years, so compared to other comsumers that is good. Thanks to your home remedies I was able to fix the problem and save myself over $100. I tried the dremel idea to make holes but my dremel was not strong enough. Next I broke a pointed drill bit and finally used a screw to make the holes and then removed it. It seems like it will work so I'll see tonight!!

I love the Comfortgel and have been using it for over a year now. I know alot of people speak of problems with the ball and socket meet, but mine has been fine, it really has. I tried the new ResMed Softgel, just to see if it was better. I actually thought it was excellent, but my Comfortgel is so much quieter. I'm staying with my Comfotgel, the small is kind of big for me, but it's still quieter and very comfortable. Like I said before, I've had no problems with the mask and any type of breakage.

I Use an auto adjusting BiPAP and have found the ComfortGel Nasal Mask to be the best of all I have tested with the variable pressure of my machine. Everything els leaked badly due to the constant pressure changes. I have two of these masks, one was my selsom used back-up mask for my old CPAP and one is relatively new. I have had no sign of problems with the sockets breaking, even though I am an active sleeper (I change positions often as arthritis pain causes discomfort). I alternate masks every other night, so maybe that has helped. I clean the mask I wore the previous night and hang dry it to help it keep fresher. Seems to work well so far, with virtually no sign of wear on the mask that is over a year old or the newer one (which does appear to be made a little sturdier. I carefully do not overtighten the lower straps too. so maybe that is a factor on the sockets holding up. I did not like the headgear that came with the mask, so I adapted the 5 strap headgear from a Fisher&Paykel Acclaim2 mask that I had tested and did not like. The top strap keeps the mask from sliding down my face and does take pressure off the lower straps. The top strap is threaded through the forehead rest and fits there well. This set up is fairly comfortable, doesn't cause pressure points, as adapted it stays in place, and it has few air leak problems. The leaks are easily solved by pulling the mask lightly from the face and resettling it, even while running. I was fortunate to have an old "spare" ComfortGel nasal mask, but now having two that I can rotate every other night is a nice option to have. When I finally replace the older mask, my current "newer" mask will become the Old one in the rotation. I do recommend getting the replacement forehead pads and changing them regularly. They do start to get stiff and you can feel the difference when you change them out.

The mechanism that holds the ball connection broke off from the mask. Obviously, I'm not the only person who has encurred this problem with this "design characteristic". These masks should have been recalled, not just waiting until the bnreakage occurs.

Size small is too big for my face - can not get a good seal and it puts pressure on my upper lip/upper gums to the point of me having to remove it halfway through the night due to pain. Size Petite - huge difference in size! It fits a bit too snug and although it doesn't hurt, I do not feel rested when I use it. It is almost like my nose fills the cavity too full and the exhaled air is not properly vented. I have not had a good nights sleep with either of these masks. Also, ball and joint are very flimsy.

I have used 2 part epoxy to fix my socket that broke. It allowed for a custom fix that added more material to the thin unsupported area of the socket that allows the break to occur.

I'm about to order this particular mask for myself. I tried 3 differnt types of mask when I was first put on the CPAP in 2008. I had a wild idea to try something different the first of the year when my insurance would replace it and choose a different type. HATED it and gave it away. I ordered another type and although it was better than the nasal type, it's still not as good and comfortable as the Comfort Gel.

The sockets break so you can reinforce them on a new unit or for a cheap fix use a chin strap areound the mask. I used A LOT of hot glue to reinforce a broken socket and it has worked for several months after the original breaking in 2 weeks.

Pretty good mask, but the PLASTIC TABS HOLDING THE STRAP IN PLACE BREAKS. This is poor engineering design and should be FIXED! I've had similar problems of brittle plastic parts with other Respironics masks. One of their masks broke while I was on tour in rural Ireland. It was a real treat trying to find superglue in the little village shops. I'm going to try a mask from a different manufacturer in the future.

The ball and socket on my mask broke, where the ball is held in by the socket...very discouraging as I haven't had my mask for a year yet, and I have no insurance to help with buying another mask!!! *Moderator's Note* - While we have many comments about the ComfortGel's design problems (and all of these we have reported to the manufacturer, Respironics!), please note that any CPAP mask is not designed to last more than 6 months. The masks are disposable goods, and while some masks are more durable than others, all are rated for 3-6 months of use.

I have a 1009042 that continuly leaks around the gel mask after the first month of use. As I tighten the straps the pressure makes for discomfort and the gel seems to leak more. The whole mask needs a re-design with more durable materials. The plastic looks like a dime store variety.

I agree with everyone about the ball sockets . I wish they would change the design tofix this problem I am buying them myself too and it does get v ery expensive . I wouldn't care if I did have to readjust my straps each night instead of the ball and socket mess . After my first one broke I started just loosening just one strap loose enough to remove the mask and connected the velcro back and took off the mask I have made it a year without breaking and now I am here to look for a replacement again . I am thinking of trying a cifferent type too but the price is less for this onne than others I have looked at sooo , I don't know for sure if I will change but I will try to use the wire tie and super glue alternative ,THANKS!

I have never had any problems with the ball and socket things. My only problem has been with the clip that mask portion that has the adjusters on it. I find it expremely funny that the part of this mask that breaks all the time is the only part Respironics does not sell a replacement part for!!!!!!. Most of us are on fixed income, and can not affort to upgrade to a different machine. You need to seriously consider fixing this problem, or at the least supply us with a replacement part a resonable price!

my husbands' mask also broke at the ball/socket - otherwise, this mask works well. He previously had a full face mask, and never could get used to it. The nasal mask doesn't bother him

Great mask until the socket breaks. Three masks used, 3 broken sockets in less than two years. replaced at no charge after I complained to company. Good service, comfortable mask but not durable.

Broke one swivel clip a week ago, now have a broken socket. Hoping that glue will hold it together for the night. Have had it for 8 months - and can't see me trying to sleep without it now.

Very comfortable mask, but I also have broken 3 ball sockets in less than a year. Will have to find a dfferent manufacturer with a stronger product. Too bad, just needs a simple engineering change to the injection mold.

I found that a drop of epoxy in each pivot will solidify the ball but will make the mask last at least a year mine is going on Two..

Add a 1mm radius at the ball tangent point and you will have a great product.

I have had two masks - both broke at the ball and socket within a year. Is there another mask that doesn't have this design flaw?

Great mask, lousy cheap ball and socket setup. Breaks WAY too easily!

The mask is great, except as all the other reviews have noted, Mask breaks at the ball socket, and is un-usable. tyhis needs a re-design or suggest finding another mask that has some durability

Love the mask but the ball socket broke in less than 2 months

I love the mask but recently the socket part of the mask broke. I haven't had any luck repairing with glue so I haven't slept in days. The gel mask is brand new so it seems a shame I can't purchase the mask frame by it's self.

Add another one to the list, ball joint broke, wish I read this review before I purchased. I have rigged dental floss around the hose piece and it works to some degree but causes the mask to lean to one side.. I am writting to the BBB, they need a recall at this point. No wonder they have raised the price, it was $59.99 when i purchased and now it's $99

The mask is comfortable, but like so many others, the ball and socket triangle support breaks. Been through two masks in less than a year. If you can fix this weak point the mask is great.

Why write a review when it seems like the company does nothing abut the complaints?

Yep, adding a Mine Broke as well comment. Geez, can't the company figure out to put some FREAKING triangle support brackets on the dang clip sockets... it has only ben a design used on buildings for over 100 years.

I agree. figure out how to fix the ball & socket. Super glue smells bad and doesn't hold very long. Otherwise, mask is very comfortable.

Ball and socket is a poor design. It breaks easily. Other than that, no complaints.

This mask is very comfortable. The reason for the bad review is because it doesnt matter how comfortable it is if you cant use it. The clip holders break every few months and you have to buy a whole new mask. I refuse to buy a new one(avg 2 per year) so im trying another design-the resmed activia. We will see, it had good reviews

The triangle mask holder keeps breaking at the ball sockets. I went through 4 in two years. They cost me 35.00 each. please redesign the comfort gel mask holder.

Mine just broke again! Very confortable, but, EXTREMELY Fragile in the ball and socket area.... Perhaps the vendor should recall them...What concerns me the most, is why we use them, and, without it, it could be fatal.... Perhaps the consumer product safety commission should look into this as well...I am off to see if I can find something els... PS: at least my remstar pro, with 8900 hrs is reliable!

Respironics is a company that charges for cheap plastic at primium prices. They build "breakable into their products" so replacements are required.

Always breaks, great if your insurance covers the cost but I don't have insurance and it keeps breaking. This is the most comfortable mask I have had but can't afford to keep buying it when it breaks all the time. Same complaint as everyone else breaks at ball and socket point.

Unusual product, in that it is very comfortable to wear, but having been through 4 of them in 2 years, I think they are total JUNK. The socket holders keep breaking. But we keep buying them, so what incentive do they have to improve the product?

Very comfortable and easy to get used to but the ball and socket held up only for a couple of months. Mine is wired together with floral wire. It's terrible to pay that kind of money for something and have it break. These companies need to test these prducts better before putting them on the market.

The left swivel clip broke off of my mask 1.5 years ago. I used some super glue and duct tape to hold it in place. When the glue dried I put in some quick setting super glue EPOXY GEL made by Pacer Technology. After 1.5 years it's still holding strong.

The mask is very comfortable and easy to get used too. But I seem to be having the same reoccurring problem with the ball sockets, very weak, I like the idea of the zip ties as a fix. No problems with forehead adjustment, yet.

The fit of the mask is good, but the socket and ball design is a major weakness. When both of my masks failed on a recent trip, I looped several stands of dental floss to the ball and wound it around the center port of the mask.

This is a very comfortable mask that has one serious flaw. The ball and socket arrangement is far too flimsy to withstand the pressure of normal usage and breaks easily.

The ball and socket is the weak point on this mask. All they have to do is to make this plastic area thicker. What I do is to lay in bed and adjust the ball and socket strap then and try to put the least amount of pressure on this area.

I had the same happen to me swivel socket broke. I tried to place the ball back in and it broke that cheap piece of plastic. They say it cost $160.00 to fix I told them it was joke I dont have to replace the whole thing. Sleep Wellness said dont worry yor Insurance will cover 90%. I said forget it no wonder Insurace is up so high. Im glad I wasnt the only one with this problem they need to fix this!

Well, I can see I will need to look for another type. Mine broke at the forehead pad. I thought it was a very comfortable mask but I agree it is cheaply made. Have not had any problems with the ball connections though I suspect that will be next. What a shame, I never got any pressure sores from it either.

My ball works fine, it is the tiny plastic socket that they slide into that keeps breaking off so then the ball fall sout and you lose the seal. EXPENSIVE! WHy can't this be fixed?

Same 2 break points: swivel clip sockets and the forehead pad arm. Such obvious planned obsolescence is shameful.

To repair broken ball sockets, drill a hole, loop plastic wire ties around the shaft of the black swivel ball, then tighten the wire ties. Then seal the hole with silicone sealant. My mask broke within two weeks, I've used this fix for 18 months.

When new this product work well, the clear plastic is very brittle and breaks in many areas. i repair mine with super glue and bits of plastic from cd jewl cases. also i wish the would make a fully ball socket like joint for the hose connection at the mask instead of just simple rotation.

Nice mask but absolutely fragile. Ball clasps are a great feature but break easy, as well as the forehead adjuster. If they would take care of these issues I would rate it 5 stars.

I have used this one since the beginning and nothing has ever broken! The seal breaks loose once in a while and I have to adjust it. Don't like the marks it leaves on my cheeks but that's all.

I would like to reply to one of the moderators notes. Why would you only design a mask to last only 3-6 months? This is a item we will need for a long time. I think we should all just boycott Respironics and then maybe they will do something about the problem. If we keep purchasing masks from them and they keep making $$ they won't change a thing! I appreiciate the tips on how to fix the mask but should I really have to fix this item myself? *Moderator's Note* - Thank you all for your comments on the Respironics ComfortGel. We understand your frustration and have certainly passed along these concerns. To answer the reviewer's specific question about why masks are designed to last only 3-6 months - it really is because of the materials used in the mask. Silicone, the material used to make almost every CPAP mask cushion or pillow, is a very delicate material and it quite easily broken down by oils in human skin or prolonged wear. Manufacturers use silicone because it is the material least likely to cause irritation or rashes on the skin of the CPAP mask user. Materials like latex, rubber, or other plastics would certainly last longer but would cause many skin problems with individuals using them for eight hours each night. Due to the need for a responsive, lightweight, and non-irritating material, CPAP mask manufacturers are stuck making disposable masks. Hope this helps and despite the complaints on the Comfort Gel, I can say it is still one of our top-selling masks (so there must be some happy users out there! =).

I agree that the mask always breaks at the swivel clips! It usually breaks in the middle of the night and I have to fix it with nail glue and tape. I broke 2 in the last month. It is very comfortable to wear when it is not broke!
