1. Can I Purchase a CPAP Machine on My Own?

Yes, you can purchase a CPAP machine on your own. However, a sleep apnea diagnosis and prescription from your doctor are required.

2. What Are the Downsides of Using a CPAP Machine?

Some common side effects include dry nose and mouth, nasal congestion, eye irritation, facial discomfort from pressure points on the mask and, in some cases, claustrophobia. Fortunately, there are simple solutions to prevent or limit all these downsides. Use a humidifier to limit dryness, ensure a proper mask fit to reduce facial discomfort, and try a smaller mask if you’re concerned about feeling claustrophobic. 3. What Is the 4-Hour Rule for CPAP?

This phrase is commonly used by insurance companies and healthcare providers as a compliance guideline. The rule states you must use your machine for at least 4 hours per night on 70% of nights (about 21 days per month) through the first 90 days of use. Insurance companies often require you meet this level of use for them to continue covering the cost of your machine. That said, symptom management and overall health typically improve with stronger compliance, so we recommend using your machine as often and for as much of the night as possible.

4. Will Insurance Cover a CPAP Machine?

In many cases, insurance plans at least partially cover the cost of a CPAP machine and sometimes other components as well.
